THE MEANING BEHIND THE MAGIC...

When I first chose Pippin for my 30th BRSD production, I knew it was more than just a milestone—it was a reflection of the journey we all take in search of meaning. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of guiding students through the magic of theatre, and each production has left its own mark. But Pippin feels particularly timely in 2025.

We live in a world that bombards us with highlight reels, empty promises of perfection, and the illusion that success is a straight path paved with applause. Like Pippin, many of us are searching for something extraordinary, only to find ourselves lost in the expectations set by mainstream society. Social media, influencers, and even the pressures of achievement whisper that we need to be more—more successful, more admired, more extraordinary. But at what cost?

This show challenges us to look past the spectacle, past the illusions of grandeur, and ask ourselves: What is truly real? What truly matters? It takes courage to see through the smoke and mirrors of the world, to step away from the dazzling distractions and embrace the quiet, simple joys that bring us genuine fulfillment.

Watching these students bring this story to life has been a gift. Their dedication, their passion, and their willingness to ask the big questions that Pippin demands of us all give me hope for the future. And speaking of gifts—I cannot express enough gratitude to our school, our community, our families, and our alumni who have supported us for 30 productions. Your belief in the power of storytelling and in these young artists is what makes this all possible.

So tonight, as the lights go down and the journey begins, I invite you to join us in asking: What makes a life extraordinary? And more importantly, what makes it real?
