The Age Of No Regret - A Note from the Director
Welcome to the NoviArts Theater Drama Club’s production of Mamma Mia!
When audiences think of this show, they often think of the sparkling jumpsuits, the platform boots, and the infectious joy of ABBA’s music. And while our students have worked incredibly hard to bring that energy to the stage, we have also discovered that, underneath the sequins, lies a profound story about the passage of time, the consequences of our choices, and the definition of family.
Our story takes place in two distinct eras. The events of the play are set in 1999, but they are haunted by the "Summer of Romance" twenty-one years earlier in 1978. As the Mamma Mia! educational materials note, the character of Donna Sheridan came of age during the 1970s, "a turbulent time when music, culture, and social norms all went through wild changes."
In the script, the character Harry Bright wistfully refers to that era as "The Age of No Regret." It was a time of analog freedom and exploration. There were no digital devices tracking our every move and keeping us tethered to a digital world. However, the 1999 setting of our story shows us the result of that era. We see Donna, a "groundbreaking" single mother who chose to raise a child alone at a time when it was not socially acceptable, working hard to provide stability. We see a daughter, Sophie, who—unlike her mother's generation—is seeking safety, certainty, and a traditional marriage.
This production is rated PG-13, reflecting the reality of these characters' lives. We have chosen not to shy away from the history, but to view it through a lens of compassion. The story asks us to consider that "the definition of a family is a subjective concept." Whether connected by blood, friendship, or a shared history on a Greek island, the characters teach us that "families come in many different shapes and sizes, and that love doesn't always need to follow the rules.”
I am incredibly proud of how our Norte Vista students have handled this material—balancing the high-energy comedy with the maturity required to tell a story about real people navigating their pasts.
Enjoy the show, and thank you for supporting the Arts in Alvord Unified School District!
