Alice by Heart - April 25 - May 04, 2025

Oak Hill High School

 End Notes

I remember sitting at IU Bloomington with Lillian Lake at International Thespian Festival, wondering what show I had randomly gotten tickets for to watch our first full day at the event. As the lights came up, I was immediately sucked into the world that was Wonderland, and I was fully in it. At curtain, I looked at Lillian and said there was no way we could do this show, but wow. What an impact this show had on me. It was all I could think about or talk about.

I walked around IU's campus that entire week with my earbuds on, playing Alice by Heart on repeat, fully in the emotions and profound effect the show had on me. How deep it was. The themes of loss and saying goodbye it taught. How growing up is not always pretty, but the story will always have some sort of beauty to it. And how one learns to cope with the many things life brings our way.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was something we could do, and we should do. For me, musicals that tell history are some of my favorites. Students make fun of me that I enjoy the sad shows more than the happy ones. But honestly, it's the story that is told within the sad ones that stick with me. And it's the reality that we grow up, learn to say goodbye and handle what life brings to us that is something everyone on this stage and in this audience has had to learn to deal and grieve with.

When we did the show reveal, I remember how kids looked at me like "huh? What are we doing?". But, it didn't take long for them to get sucked down the hole and fall in love with the story and music. Because though we may not be in a bunker during World War II, the story is relevant.

So, as you sit and watch tonight, know that this story means a lot to all of us. Many seniors will be on the stage tonight, doing various tech and acting roles that are in the midst of learning how to let go and move on. Moving on to another page of their story.
