Gypsy - January 29 - February 08, 2026

Red Dragon PLayers

  Director's Note

Gypsy is often considered one of the greatest American musicals ever written, and it’s also one of the most demanding. That’s exactly why I’m so proud of these students. Taking on a show of this size and complexity at the high school level is no small feat, and they have met the challenge with focus, resilience, and an incredible amount of heart.

This production came out of a necessary pivot. When we learned we would be performing in the PAC at Austin High instead of our usual home in the Preas Theatre, we knew we needed a show that could both rise to a new space and truly showcase what our program is capable of. Gypsy allowed us to do exactly that while remaining true to who we are as Red Dragon Players.

My own love for Gypsy comes from seeing it in very different places. The first time was in a small community theatre in Brooklyn, tucked into the basement of an old church converted into a performance space. That night I listened to the Overture on repeat my entire subway ride home. Years later, I saw it again on Broadway with the extraordinary Audra McDonald as Rose. As the curtains closed I turned to my friend and we both had tears streaming down our faces. What stayed with me wasn’t the size of the production, but how powerfully the story and music landed each time. No matter the space, Gypsy endures.

This show only works because of the collaboration behind it. I’m grateful to my coworker and creative partner, our incredible student stage management team who keep everything running smoothly, our tech students who transformed this space, and our live band whose energy brings the story to life. Together, they reflect the very best of our Fine Arts community at Austin High! Artists supporting artists.

At its core, Gypsy is about ambition, identity, and the need to be seen. Those themes feel especially meaningful in a high school setting, where young artists are finding their voices and learning to take creative risks. My hope is that this production not only entertains, but also helps audiences appreciate why Gypsy is considered one of the greatest American musicals; and what’s possible when students are trusted with challenging, meaningful work.

Thank you for being here and for supporting these young artists!
