Rent - May 08 - May 09, 2026

The Ghostlight Players

 Director Notes

Rent has always been a story about passion, perseverance, and the power of community. When it premiered in the ’90s, it gave voice to a generation of young artists searching for meaning and connection in a world that often felt uncertain. It captured a very specific moment in time, yet its message has only grown more powerful with age.

Nearly three decades later, Rent continues to resonate in ways none of us could have predicted. We still see people fighting to create, to love, and to find where they belong in the midst of instability and change. The questions this show asks about identity, compassion, chosen family, and what it truly means to measure a year in love feel just as urgent now as they did in 1996.

As we have built this production here within our own community, we have felt that same spirit of resilience. Everyone involved including performers, musicians, designers, and production staff has juggled day jobs, family responsibilities, school, and everyday life while committing to rehearsals. People traveled from all different parts of the city, rearranged schedules, swapped shifts, and carved out time just to make sure this story could come alive on our stage.

And it has not always been easy. We have faced the familiar community theatre challenges such as limited resources, tight timelines, and those “how are we going to pull this off” moments. But like the characters in this story, we kept showing up because the message matters, the music matters, and the community we have built through this process matters most of all.

The cast and crew you see on stage have poured their hearts into this. Much like the bohemians of Rent, we are a group of artists doing what we love not for fame or recognition, but because storytelling has value. Because theatre creates connection. Because the themes of love, loss, friendship, hope, and the courage to speak your truth still mirror who we are, maybe now more than ever.

Thank you for being here, for supporting live theatre, and for sharing this moment with us. We hope Rent encourages you to live boldly, love deeply, and embrace every moment you are given.

No day but today.
