When choosing shows for our season, I always try to find material that will challenge the students and this year was no exception. Although Little Shop of Horrors is a "smaller" musical, it has some BIG moving parts (Audrey II) to work with and that was one of the things that made me so excited to direct it! When students are challenged to memorize lines, find the character arcs, learn music and perfect their choreo... they also learn a lot about themselves. They learn what they can accomplish in a short amount of time. They learn that they are capable of meeting a deadline. They learn to be fearless with acting choices to see if something will work and if it doesn't... they learn to accept constructive criticism with grace. They ultimately learn to work together to build a final product, each one of them having a part in the bigger picture... which is what you are about to see tonight. Each student in the cast and crew has put in an enormous amount of time to create this piece and I am thankful for their amazng work ethic. They never give up... which is evident with this show because, for years I'd been asked to put it on the list of contenders for our musical by both current students and alunmi. It was a movie I'd watched back in the 80's with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin and a musical I had seen a handful of times. But it wasn't until we started working with plants coming to life that it really hit me...this is the first time we've ever done anything like this and the cast and crew were not the only ones learning something new. Seeing your vision come to life on stage and getting students excited about staying after school to work together on a project... there really isn't anything better than that. I am constantly amazed at the way the puzzle of a show comes together in the end. I am pleased to show you what we've been working on for the last month or so and want to thank you for always supporting us and live theatre!
Enjoy the show,
