Fiddler on the Roof - June 25 - June 30, 2026

City of Holladay

 Director Notes

Welcome to the world of Fiddler on the Roof!

The first time I interacted with this musical, I was a very young girl. It brings me back to “carpet picnics” in my childhood home, singing along to Matchmaker with my sisters and falling in love with the wistfully nostalgic land of Anatevka.

Revisiting this story as a 23-year-old, it means a whole lot more. Fiddler on the Roof is a tale of expansion, oppression, challenging ideals and inspiring growth. Although Anatevka in 1905 is wildly different from Holladay in 2026, I am struck by how relevant these themes seem today.

My hope for this production is that you enjoy all of the wonderfully traditional elements that make this musical a timeless classic. I also hope that you leave challenged, inspired and willing to begin or continue conversations that create change. Art has always had a way of weaving itself into my life and being a tool to discover new ideas - both about myself and the world around me. I believe interacting with art can change us all for the better, if we let it.

“I know what I believe theatre’s for, which is to create empathy despite difference.” - Rachel O’Riordan

I would like to give my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who touched this production. This team has taken the time to put together resources to create quality work, educate each other on cultural accuracy, and dedicate their talents to tell this powerful story. This collaboration reminds me of why I am so drawn to this community in the first place. Theatre can only happen if a lot of people come together and decide to believe in each other, so thank you for believing in me!

And you are a vital part of this community. Thank you for coming to the theatre, or shall I say, the park! I urge you to laugh, lean in, applaud, and enjoy the work of this talented team.

My endless thanks,

Emily Tatum
