Sister Act - November 07 - November 10, 2024

Washington Community Theatre, Inc.

 Letter from the Director

Welcome to Washington Community Theatre's production of the feel-good smash hit musical comedy, "Sister Act".  Based on the popular 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, Sister Act first premiered in 2006 at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California.  It opened in London in 2009 and had its New York Broadway premier in April 2011.  The show ran for 561 performances and received five Tony Award nominations that year, including Best Musical.

When Philadelphia disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put into protective custody in the one place the cops are certain she won't be discovered - a cloistered convent at a local church.  Disguised as a nun, she soon finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle of a nun and the uptight regimented Mother Superior who rules the convent.  Using her "joie de vivre" and her unique singing talent to inspire the lackluster convent choir and breathe new life into the dying church, Deloris soon blows her cover and is discovered by the thugs who want to snuff her out!   You can guess who comes out on top and gets to "raise her voice" in the end.

Filled with powerful gospel-style music, inventive choreography and lovable over the top characterizations, "Sister Act" is a moving story that is a tribute to the power of friendship, not unlike the long-lasting friendships that so often develop with members of our own theatre community!

While the road to "Sister Act" has met with a few twists and turns along the way, we hope that you find this show to indeed be "beautiful" and a heartfelt reason to "spread the love around"!
